Looking to start a new blog? Not any blog, but a long term and profitable blog.
In this step-by-step guide you’ll discover how easily it is to create your new blog and ready to rock!
Before we get started, Iwant you to ask those very important 3 questions:
- Why starting a blog?
- What is the main purpose of starting a blog?
- What are your aims?
Think for a moment…
I want you to ask those questions, because you need to have enough powerful raisons to embrace the learning curve, and pull you through the setbacks to do whatever it takes to succeed with your online business.
Also, the raison what I pointed this out, I found that a lot of posts out there are not covering the mindset that you need to cultivate to make your blog successful.
For me it’s the key element to success in anything in life.
Without being said, let’s jump right away into the basic steps to set up your own blog and get on the way to designing a life in your own terms.
Step #1: Set goals
As I said above, you need to have some empowering goals that will set you on track of building your online business.
If you don’t have goals, you will be directionless. When you are clear about what you want to accomplish, it’s going to be easy for you to build a specific plan to reach your aims, and also be laser focused.
When you just starting out, don’t make your goals very big. The trick is to set goals that are attainable, and realistic for you.
You can set different goals if you want. Here are some examples:
- 1st goal: Make just 10 $ a month.
- 2nd Drive 200 visitors a day.
- 3rd goal: Have 200 Pinterest followers.
- So on….
The bottom line is to set small and achievable goals that you know you can accomplish. As times goes on, when you achieve one of your goals, then move on to next step.
Scale things up in very small increments, you have all the time ahead of you. If you reach 10 $, great! Ask yourself how can I attain 20 $ this time?
Look for new strategies, and assess what worked and what didn’t work. Learn from your mistakes and move on.
If you want learn more about how to achieve your goals, you can check my article about: 4 easy steps to achieve your goals.
Step #2: Figure out your passion
That is one of the critical element to any successful blog. Why?
Think for a moment. How can you work in something that you have no emotional connection towards it? No love, no passion. It’s insane!
Working in a full time job that you probably hate (that’s why you are reading this post J), and you have to put extra hours to work on your business at the evenings.
If you don’t have any interest of what you’re working on, you’ll be less likely to take the necessary actions towards it. You’ll always push yourself to do this, or this, and that can be exhausting over time. The motivation is a very limited energy.
The trick is you need to be pulled by what you’re doing. It has to be some love connection with what you are doing.
My success formula is this: passion equal your niche.
So what are you passionate about? What are your interests? What is this thing that you can enjoy doing for a long time?
You can look for old experiences too. Something that you stopped doing it for a long time ago, and you had some interest in it.
Then you have to look if there’s a demand. It’s very vital.
You can’t spend your time, and effort working on something that there’s no demand for it.
For instance, you can use Google Trends. An awesome tool that shows you the volume search over time, and it’s a great way to have idea if it’s worthwhile to invest in this niche or not.
After, ask yourself if you can monetize your content. I know this question might seem strange for some, but let’s be honest, if you want to stay at home, and work in something that you love, you have to find a way to make money from your blog.
The easiest way is doing affiliate marketing by promoting others people’s products and gain commissions if someone make a purchase, you can offer you own products and services, also you can start your own e-commerce store. There are contless ways to monetize your blog.
Action tip: You need to take actions on those questions. Answering them will make the next steps of this guide easy to follow. So what I want you to do is this:
- Go a calm place, and take deep breath.
- Once you’re in a good state, take a pen and piece of paper, and write down those 3 questions.
- Take your time on your answers. Do your research, make a list of things that excites you, before you move the next step.
Step #3: Choose your platform
There are a lot of blogging platforms out there. But the most websites are WordPress sites.
You can find other platforms like Wix, or space square, but the WordPress is the greatest. Why?
The reasons why I chose WordPress, and why I recommend it to you:
- Easy to use. The WordPress dashboard is very easy to navigate in.
- You have more option to customize your blog, with a lot of themes, and a millions of free plugins.
- There is a lot of support with WordPress too. There are blogs posts, WordPress forums, YouTube videos, courses, …
- Finally, WordPress is an open source software. It means that WordPress is maintained by large group of people over the world. So there’s not risk that WordPress disappears one day.
So, let’s move on to the next step which is choosing your domain name.
Step #4: Choose a domain name
A domain name is your website name. This will be what you in the address bar.
So, my domain name is: www.Lightyourmind.com
You can look for the exact name that will match you niche. But my advice to you guys is don’t spend your time and your energy to look for the perfect name!
What’s matter the most is the quality of the content that you are delivering to the world.
The domain name has nothing to do with the SEO. I mentioned this because a lot of people have this misconception that your name’s website will impact the ranking in the search engine.
My point is that you name really does not matter. What matter the most is the value that you are giving, and that’s what you should to focus on if you want to be a successful blogger.
How do I get a domain name?
You can click here to purchase a domain name and create your blog with BlueHost, and you can get the domain name at the same time that you set up hosting for only 2.75 $/ month, and a free domain name as a bonus.
Step #5: Select a blog hosting package.
What’s hosting? A Host is a server where you can access to run your website. Every website needs a place where you can save your work, and where people can get into to access your content.
And again, the domain name is FREE if you sign up for 12 months with Bluehost.
I will walk through every step to register your first domain name.
First, select the first plan:
Next, choose the basic plan. It’s all you need to start.
Note that the lowest price of $2.75 per month is if you sign up for the longer contract term of 36 months (paid up front). I recommend to go for it to take the advantage of this low pricing plan, and here’s why:
- You set a long term commitment for yourself. Remember you are here to create an online business not to make a quick money, but you’re building a brand.
- It’s 30 days risk-free. You can cancel it at any time during the first 30 days.
After selecting your plan, enter your domain name as seen below:
Enter your domain under “new domain”. Fill in your contact information, and then go to the package information section.
So your screen should be like this:
I recommend to add “the domain privacy option” to ensure that your personal information remains privacy.
Congratulations! You bought your first domain name.
Now, let’s get started with WordPress.
Step #6: Install WordPress on your new blog
Don’t worry, BlueHost made it easier for you.
just made it easier than ever to get started with WordPress. They actually eliminated a couple of steps in this process, so you’ll get through it in no time.
After setting up your password, you should be directed to select a theme for your WordPress site. Your screen should look like this:
You can select any one of these free themes to get started. You can change your theme later on.
First, we want to get you to the main screen where you can start to play around and customize things.
After selecting a theme to start with, your screen should look like this:
Select the “Business” option to be taken to the next screen (it doesn’t matter if you don’t have an actual business started yet – this is the first step in that process!).
You will then be taken to a dashboard that looks like this:
From this step, you can write your first post and start looking through the options in WordPress, but we recommend settling on a good theme first.
Know you are ready to rock with your new blog. It was very easy to set up, isn’t!
Gold Mindest Ideas That You Must Know To Stick With Your Online Business
So, before you start creating your first blog post, I want to give I quick rundown on what you must do to stick with your new online business over the long run, and be successful with it.
It’s very very important to have those ideas in your mind because a business is 90% mindset and 10% action. That why a lot of people give up.
Gold Idea #1: Fall in love with the journey.
This mindset thinking is very crucial to have in order knock off your goals, and be a successful blogger.
You see a lot of people give up because they don’t get the results that they excepted. Why? Because they are too attached to the outcomes.
You have to think your business as a marathon not as a sprint.
Enjoy the process, stick with your biz even if you don’t get any result, keep going.
Make sure to try different strategies, and learn from other successful blogger. Which will take us to the next gold idea.
Gold Idea #2: Invest in yourself
That is a huge component to success in every area of your life.
You have to be a learning machine if you want to stand above the rest.
If you want to save time and even money, my recommendation is to find a great course on blogging, and follow the steps. Don’t reinvent the wheel.
There are a lot of courses out there. You can find blogging courses in Udemy for cheap prices starting at 10$.
Find bestselling courses, read their descriptions, their programmers, comments before you make the purchase.
What I love about courses is in the first hand they are taught by experts sharing a lot of stuff that you can’t find elsewhere, and the second hand all the information is compiled in one place which will save a lot of time and fast track your progress.
Begin with Udemy, it’s a great place to start with. And you can find other courses that will support your biz growth such as SEO, affiliate marketing, and more.
It’s also important to invest in yourself and take control of your thinking, which is one the attributes of successful people.

Gold Idea #3: Focus on the value that you are delivering to the world.
Spend more time on the content rather than the post’s title, or the design.
Make sure to share the best of the best, and how you can serve others to solve a specific problem.
You’ll be reminded by the value that you’ve given to the world.
Gold Idea #4: The beginning is going to be difficult.
I’m sad to say this but it’s the truth.
In the beginning stage, there’s a learning curve that you have to go through and make things happen.
You have to be familiar with WordPress, learn how to blog, find relevant plugins, learn SEO, and a lot of things that you must hone to run your business.
But once you gain this knowledge, and you set things up, everything will take care of itself.
Gold Idea #5: Focus on one source of traffic
There are many ways to drive traffic to your blog. You can use Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, Twitter….
Doing them all in the beginning is a bit overwhelming, especially in in the beginning stage of your business.
My advice to you is to start with one platform, master it, and move to the next one.
I chose Pinterest, because I wanted a lot of organic traffic and for free, that’s what I recommend for you to start with. You can check out this article on 10 pinterest tips to drive free traffic to your blog.
Just make sure that your content is optimized for Pinterest, and learn how it works so you can stand on the spot of Pinterest search results.
Understand that the traffic is earned not given. Meaning, you have to know first what people love before you start creating content.
How do you do this?
I use Pinterest search bar combined with Google keywords tool to get an idea what people search for.
Or you can use a great tool called Keyword Everywhere that shows the average volume of searched keywords in Google search Engine.
Then optimize your blog post for those keywords. It’s called SEO (Search Engine Optimization). So, Include your keywords everywhere: Images, headlines, descriptions. That’s how you’ll get seen in the search results.
That was my beginners step-by-step guide on how to start a successful blog. I hope that helped you to set up your new blog, and if you have any question, drop them in the comments bellow. I’ll be happy to answer them.
And remember, It’s all about the micro-commitment that you make every single day to grow your biz, and stick with it over a long period of time.
